On my way to get a pizza for supper, I spotted something at the curb of one house. Listed for sale, and there were a dozen wood veneer peach baskets. Got closer, and saw canvas. Then a folded oilskin poncho. Yippee! Closer still, some 1/4" steel rods for a camp cot.

By the time I pulled away, I had:
1x oilskin stle Canadian Army poncho
1x canvas bedroll cover with the name Major JJ Platt, and a Montreal address. No service number or unit markings obvious.
parts for at least 1x canvas and rod camp cot.

Good haul! And the pizza was good. (I had a $4 off coupon too.)

Ha ha, I love things like this. I used to get pretty good results many many years ago, but have not had any luck in years.

    No guarantee but it IS an unusual name;
PLATT, John James, Captain (Acting Major) - Mention in Despatches - Provost Corps - awarded as per Canada Gazette dated 6 October 1945 and CARO/6114 of that date.

I enjoy these stories too because it gives me hope that it may happen to me someday. A friend who works at a local surplus store told me about a guy who brought in a very valuable medal grouping that he found in the garbage of a house that was being demolished. The medals were for a fellow who served in both world wars and then as a public servant and had multiple long service awards. Very unusual. It still amazes me that people throw that type of thing away and don't have a clue that it would be of interest to someone or that it might have some value.

Named kit can be fascinating to research. I recently bought a lovely condition 1942 British airborne bedroll at Marway's auction. There were three names on it - two ORs with British regimental numbers and an officer (no number).

British Airborne Sleeping Bag, Maker marked WARING & GILLOW LTD 1942. Heavy dull tan canvas bottom, camo coth top. Has names on it PTE ROSS stroked out, LT H.G. MacWILLIAM, PTE. E REYNOLDS 4922451 stroked out and J ROSS 14410275 stroked out.

Auctioneer said bedroll had belonged to a 1 Canadian Parachute Battalion man - and they are trying to find out his name for me. One of the names on the bedroll was for Pte Ross whom I have positively identified now as being with the Parachute Regiment, attached to 3 Parachute Brigade Headquarters (Brigadier James Hill commanding, and much beloved by 1 Canadian Parachute Bn which was in 2 Para Bde), and Ross was reported as missing in action 1944-06-06. He is still missing and is commemorated in France.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission record says:

    ROSS, JOHN WILLIAM
    Rank:Private
    Service No:14410275
    Date of Death:06/06/1944
    Age:20
Regiment/Service:Army Air Corps attd. H.Q. 3rd Parachute Bde
Panel Reference Panel 18, Column 1.Memorial BAYEUX MEMORIAL
Additional Information: Son of John Phillip and Alice May Ross, of Neasden, Middlesex.

    Another story on WWII cots

I decdied to give to a reenactor friend a folding army cot that I had been using. I had to replace the canvas and the two end cross-bars years ago so it did not have any real market value, but he could use it.

I also had two bundles of canvas folding kit that I had never opened up and even forget where I got it from. I opened it up and lo and behold it was a complete and original clearly marked in a couple of places 1942 /|\ British issue folding army cot! A keeper. :-)
