In 2005, a member of Colonel Menard's family put his medals up for auction and Quebec philanthropist Ivonis Mazzarolo paid $40,000 to keep the medals in Canada.

On a happy note, while I was Curator of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Museum and Archives, I walked into a store on Sparks Street in Ottawa (about 3 years ago) that was selling original old maps etc. As I walked in, there on an easel was the poster of LtCol Cec Merrit winning his VC at Dieppe. The dealer was excellent and I bought it for the Seaforth Museum. Although Cec Merritt was Commanding the South Saskatchewan Regiment at the time, he was a Seaforth before and after, so we claim his as ours too. (Just as Piper Richardson VC was a Seaforth before he, and hundreds of others, went to the 16th Bn CEF where he won his VC.)

I had the great pleasure of meeting LtCol Cec Merritt VC several times, as well as Smokey Smith VC and Freddy Tilston VC.
