    Constructed in 1956 in memory of WWI (1914 - 1918), WWII (1939 - 1945) and the Korean War (1950 - 1953) veterans.

My interest in the Cenotaph in Bancroft is very dear to me. My uncle Clifford is commemorated on this memorial. He can be found 3rd from the bottom under the date 1939-1945.

Also of great interest to me is Alvin Neil is also commemorated on this memorial, his name can be found under the same date but at number 24 on the list.

I do find it odd that both Alvin and Clifford’s names are spelled incorrectly. Alvin is commemorated as Elvin, and Clifford’s last name is missing the first “r” and the last “I”. This fact was met with much frustration to the family, as the Legion President who oversaw the creation of the Cenotaph was a first cousin of Clifford.

Close up of the center base of the Memorial. This center appears to be inlayed with another, much older memorial. It is made of a white stone and bears the following Inscription “IN HONOR (note spelling) OF OUR FALLEN HEROS IN WAR 1914-1918”
Following this the names are listed under the following Townships “BANCROFT, DUNGANNON, FARADAY, and MONTEAGLE&HERSCHEL”

This is closer, showing the names of the WWII commemorations. I did not take photos of the rest of the names as my main interest at the time the photos were taken was to show both Alvin and Clifford.
