Modified WWII boots?

Hey guys,
Got these boots and they look like they may be modified WWII boots to reflect later required styles. They have clearly had material added to the tongue and the upper of the boot, the original boot and soles look WWII to me with the steel toe and heels and the nails in the soles. What do you think?

Nice! But no idea on the mods. Have a paratrooper look to them, but I don't think they would have iron on the soles.

Sorry I can not help Jeff, my knowledge of footwear is less than adequate. All I can say with any certainly is you come up with the darnedest things.
