Anyone know who is selling the fake German militaria along the south wall at this mall in Edmonton? Poor quality fakes and many have been artificially aged and it obvious, to me at least... I hope others are not taken in by them either.

I see them at the Inside Antiques mall in Calgary too. Good for a chuckle. Doesn't help to mention anything to the mall proprietors either. They could care less as long as suckers buy it up.

In this case the mall owners were actually talking about how they weren't happy with the situation but it's 3 weeks later and nothing has changed.... guess if the guy is making money for the mall they can find it in their hearts to overlook the poor business activities.... sigh...

From a few postings I've put up on similar subject matter(faking memorabilia) ,it seems that naming, whether on the site or PM'ing,is frowned upon.

I have no problem naming names, as long as it can be backed up with facts. And is done through the PM system. We need to remember that anything posted on the forums that can be considered as inflammatory, can get the site admin into trouble.

Well as far as I know there isn't anyone monitoring our PM's so who would know if we share information about dealers whether it be positive or otherwise? Besides, I'm just looking for the identity of this dealer and someone providing me that information is not unethical nor illegal. As a collector it is in my best interest to know who the reputable dealers are in my area and who I should be wary of. I've already formed an opinion on this person anyways.... but who knows, maybe this dealer is just very naive and someone is feeding him/her these items as original... not likely but possible.

I agree. I try to be as knowledgeable as I can be,but if we can prevent anyone from being burned,it is a good thing. Plus,it makes those who are selling fake/repros as original think twice, therefeore scares them away from the collecting "hobby".

    Happy collecting everyone!

First off, no one can see your PM's. I have played with all available admin functions and no where do I get access to anyone's PM's. What's posted publicly on this forum can cause legal trouble, but feel free to PM what information you would like. That is up to your discretion.

I know someone who runs an antiques mall and I mentioned a specific dealer who was selling fake German stuff. Her reply was, as long as they don't have it marked as original, there is nothing they are going to do. They are not experts on everything, its up to the buyer to do the research and determine originality. There is no recourse for the buyer in an antiques mall same as at auction.
If the seller advertises the item as original and its proven fake, then there is recourse.

It seems as always, buyers beware.

These are indeed marked as original... there is a repro SS smock and it has a paper tag attached explaining how rare it is since it is an original smock for a SS 101st airborne sniper!!! At least the guy could have done some research before making such an erroneous claim...

Then I would think the mall owner would want to limit the damage to his stores name and any potential legal action.

Infanteer, All I can suggest is it possible you could approach the guy, pretending to be interested, and gain either a business card or his contact details.

I do not know how far this mall is for you to travel. So the idea may be outside the realm of possibilities.

I'm at the mall every weekend or every second weekend usually... I've never been there at the same time as the owner of the booth in question and of course the mall operators won't reveal the identities of their dealers which is to be expected. Perhaps if I express some concern about shady practices going on in the mall they will get a bit more proactive...

Mother of God, that stuff is a collection of very bad fakes marketed as the real deal. I dropped by this afternoon, and after 2 seconds laughed out load on the SS helmet with the COA , wow...............The smock has the eagle glued on the sleeve ( glue is letting go, eagle is falling off)

This guy puts a lot of true sellers to shame.

Exactly.... I understand the concept of buyer beware but I just have to draw the line at declaring obviously reproduction items as original and going so far as to display phoney provenance in the hopes of ripping someone off. And it's not just one or two items, it's a dozen or more. It's just so obvious that this person has unethical intent. I don't know about everyone else but this type of behavior is just not acceptable and hurts the hobby, especially when you consider that it is most likely going to be new collector's who have the greatest potential of being burned by this type of activity. And it's probably obvious that this type of activity is a real sore spot for me.

This leaves a bad taste when it comes to collecting. This is a 100% rip off to a novice collector. Even the crusher cap that looks mint is labeled as being 100% original.........

It bother me as well, might have to drop by and talk to the owners......

If you look at my display there (next to Richards, right side, and down the center aisle) I have some German items and other reproductions, but are marked on the tags. I have some German repro stuff as some people like to buy it as they can afford a $40.00 repro dagger compared to a $1500 dagger.

All my Canadian items that are repro (1CANPARA plastic and Armd Carrier badge) are also clearly marked repro. I have talked to the two owners of that booth, my impression are thay are very uninformed on military items and have purchased these from someone who convinced them they are all real. The smock is so obvious fake and I advised him of that, again he stated that he purchased it and is convinced it is real.
I had to back off talking to him as he became upset and I think he was under the impression I was trying to get the price down and bad mouth his items. I am no expert on German items but I told him the water slide decals on the helmet is a sure sign of reproduction. I even tried to show him my German fire fighter helmet with the decals to compare.

Any one looking at my two displays from Thursday on, I will be taking most to the Calgary show, the shelves will be fairly bare sorry.

PS Did any one from this fourm buy that 37 pattern backpack for carrying hot food? I thought it was for a mortar but found out is for carrying hot food.

Two guys.... I'm pretty sure I know who that is. Ya, they are not very knowledgable on military items but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't know what they have.... I mean anyone who deals in antiques should be able to differentiate between newly made items and those that have real age.... Or maybe they are just really crappy at what they do.

Dealer at Rocky Mountain Antique mall, Edmonton Empty Tanker Mike, Check This Out!

Post by edstorey Mon Mar 25, 2013 2:03 pm

I read this string and shake my head!

Click on this link [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Go the the Up Close Series, check item No. 7 The book has been in publication for a decade and the webbing bag for carrying insulated food containers is in it. For $30.00 you would have known what the bag was. I would think someone who has a stall in an Antiques Market would want to know what you are selling.

So it is no surprise the guy selling German stuff has no clue what he has and I am equally not surprised that there are loads of the ill-informed who are out there buying the stuff.

I know, if it is not free and on the internet, no-one reads it.

    Still shaking my head....

Ed, be careful shaking your head too much, the bolts may come loose and it will fall off.

As a collector of just about everything Canadian miltiaria related my library is pretty good but, still under stocked for some things.
