Looks like this forum is going the way of MCN and other Commonwealth forums. Lots of people who joined have not even made a single post yet...too bad.

I don't know...or for that matter, even care about the politics involved with running a forum. This was done solely for fun and a place for reference and discussion relating to Canadian and CW militaria. I hate to think it's because I don't belong to a certain clique or upper echelon of big name collectors...wouldn't be comfortable with that anyways. When it comes down to it, all of us are here to learn and enjoy the hobby.

So, if anyone thinks they have an idea to perk things up here...please speak up. I am now working outrageous hours and try to post whenever I can...but it's tough. And like I said before, I will change anything to suit the needs of the membership.

And to everyone who has contributed so far...A big thumbs up!! I have learned a lot from you all. party2

I haven't been buying alot lately due to some recent large purchases, so not much to post. Been real busy looking for a new job and the usual family stuff also.
Remember summer is traditionally a slow time for all forums, especially for us Canucks, we only have three months to enjoy the outdoors and warm weather.LOL!
I have also had issues with photo hosting lately, which stopped me from posting some stuff last week. Will try again and see if I can get it to work.

Having said that, I check in daily and read through the posts that are made and of course the reference stuff already posted is great.
Maybe try a mass post day, where everyone tries to post something new on a certain date.

Yeah, I suppose summer could be the reason...I never take holidays or really get to enjoy the summer so I didn't think about that Embarassed

Post by Infanteer Sat Jun 19, 2010 7:09 am

I'm still checking the forum almost daily but haven't been posting as I just have too much going on to take the time. It's kind of a revolving cycle because when there is not a lot of activity or feedback on the forum there is not much motivation to post, which means there is even less activity and even less motivation to post and it spirals down from there. I think the key is not to give up, to spread the word about the forum and things will eventually pick up. Unfortunately it probably means that a small core of dedicated collectors bear the burden of submitting the majority of the posts. I would love to help keep this forum alive but sadly my time is limited at the moment. I will however make an effort to make some new posts as time permits.

I have to agree with INFANTEER......

Also there are very few postings in my area of collecting.....

I'm a little slow to reply to this topic and can't really add much to whats been said already. I too check the forum daily. At home I am dial up, results are usually disastrous when I try to post anything but text. Currently my locations internet is wonky at best.

As for my collection....well that has been put on serious hold, no new acquisitions for me at all.

    Hi

I too check in just about every day but like you and others I have competing priorities and very few new items in the collection.

Don't be down-hearted about activity on the Forum. I don't see any sign of it being shunned by any established collectors or what not. Bill himself would be a big-time collector in my eyes. Just a slow start-up. members joining and not posting is all to common on any Forum.

I think the Forum set up and topic layout is fine. Patience I guess is what I'm saying. It's a broad theme Forum and many Collectors are narrow themed. They'll post when they have something to say.

Hang in there. I ain't ever going back to that MCA Forum!!!

Yes, Bill is a great guy and I would consider him a well established collector too. But he's not the only one, there are many members here I consider big-time collectors...and your all great all-round people. I was thinking more along the lines of some of the other forum admins out there. There is one I've been a member of for a while...and now after I start this forum I have my IP address banned on that site. Anyone who knows me can say I don't cause grief for anyone...or pretend I know everything...I just want to continue contributing like I have been for years.

I know its a tough sell not having the site buried in third reich and US militaria...but there are so many of those forums out there.

This is a bit embarrassing. I am not sure what a big time collector is? Perhaps it is a disease...
Qsamike is also a "big time" collector, and I see many of the names here on other forums. Mike R, Darrell etc are all major collectors in their own areas, and are contributing here. Summer, as has been repeatedly said, is a slow time for Canadian collectors. But that isn't the crux of the problem. Traffic is. I think we need to promote the Forum at badge shows, in collector's journals, at re-enactors events, etc. Tell a fellow collector about this Forum, and ask them to join. A "critical mass" is hard to determine, but at some point enough postings will make a healthier Forum. There is some work to do to make it that far, but there is interest out there.

While I am a long in the tooth collector I am just a newbie here but I have a comment if I may. One of the things I don't like here is the ranking system you have chosen to use. Placing ranks next to a persons name creates a class system and can be intimidating to newer collectors. Everyone should be on a level playing field.

    Hello Ed:

If I'm not mistaken, with the exception of the Administrators and Moderators, a person's rank on this forum is based on the number of his or her posts. You receive promotions to higher ranks by making posts. Other forums use similar systems with the Administrators and Moderators holding higher ranks because of their position.

With that said, when asked to become a Moderator, I told Dale I didn't want the rank of 'Brig. General Moderator'. - - - - - Dale, soon this forum will be celebrating it's one year anniversary. Is my original request doable?

    Ed:

The following rank information is posted on another thread:

Here is a quick overview of the rank system I have set up. May be a little far fetched given the small amount of collectors, but it gives incentive to post all you can. First is the rank, followed by the number of posts needed to obtained the rank. As you obtain new ranks it will be shown on your posts and profile with a new shoulderboard icon. It follows the modern CF rank system.

So far the highest rank a registered member can obtain will be Colonel. This may change in the future depending on the success of the forum.

Private Recruit - Rank upon registering
    Private - 25 posts
    Corporal - 50 posts
    Master Corporal - 100 posts
    Sergeant - 200 posts
    Warrant Officer - 250 posts
Master Warrant Officer - 300 posts
Chief Warrant Officer - 350 posts
    Officer Cadet - 450 posts
    Second Lieutenant - 550 posts
    Lieutenant - 600 posts
    Captain - 650 posts
    Major - 750 posts
    Lieutenant Colonel - 800 posts
    Colonel - 1000 posts

    Just to add,
As things go along here I will try to accommodate ranks from other services if a member asks for it. I am not sure yet of I can make this an automatic feature. I may just have to create the ranks and icons for anyone who asks. For now we will stick with army ranks until the need arises.

    Thank you

The ranks should not be an incentive for people to post gibberish. I only ever post when I am truly impressed, have something to add or when someone has written an excellent post. I don't care about peoples ranks, as it is not at all an indication of how knowledgeable a person is. It just means he posts a lot, but these posts might not add anything to the forum.

Agreed. And as always, if anyone here would like to moderate a section all you have to do is PM me. Your rank will automatically go up. Moderators are, and always will be the backbone of a successful forum.

These forums take time. A Canadian militaria forum will not advance as fast as a TR related one. But just by the qualified members seen here so far, I would think any Canadian militaria or military question could be answered.

One thing I noticed is that this forum almost never comes up in google searches. It took a year but finally happened for me. I was searching WW2 D-day beach group helmets and GCR's 2 came up [oops he's down to one now :bounce: ] Any way to boost the ranking for goggle searches?

    Thks

One thing I've seen on this forum is that the sections have too many subsections. Most other forums limit the number of subsections. What this does give the casual visitor a quicker idea of what is being discussed.Too many sub sections fragments the topic. Example...headgear,uniforms and field gear....should be one section.

I like that it covers different periods from Victorian to present, and each period should be on its own. Limiting the number of subsections might bring a focus to the message board that isn't present now.

I'll be attempting some new changes soon...if any of you have some input on how things could better be laid out, please speak up. I will change anything to suit members needs...to an extent of course.

As far as Googling goes, I have the site listed with most of the major search engines for over a year now but the site still doesn't pop up in searches very often. This is why I have been advertising on other forums with a link in my signature. Seems to work, I have seen quite a few new registrations lately. Doing this can also be considered 'stepping on toes' with some forums so it has to be done discretely.

I totally agree with Dwayne about the multitude of sections and sub-sections. I think I already spoke out on this matter a while ago and some sections were amalgamated at the time. However, there are still quite a lot and I wouldn't mind seeing a couple being put together.

I agree. A couple of the major headings could be combined (Eg Marketplace and Collectors Corner), and the other Forum headings reduced to three or four subcategories, possibly Uniforms, Headdress, Field Gear and Weapons as one, Medals, Badges, Insignia and Ephemera as another, Vehicles Ordnance Aircraft, and Veteran's (stories, research etc.)
Just an idea to start some discussion.

I know Dale has been eliminating some subsections and was looking to combine some more as well. Your input is appreciated and we will continue to make changes to the forum to suit all of the members.
As for dying off, I think things have picked up and I get emails everytime a new member joins an there are a few almost everyday. I think the challenge then becomes getting them posting.
The membership base is good and we have some of the most knowledgable Canadian collectors here, its a great forum for sure. If we all keep posting away, inviting new members, we will grow! party2

Several members of this forum regularly post on other forums, but not here. I have always wondered why that is?

I dunno. I see fair number of repeat forum members here actually. I do refer people here from the other more specific Fora (IE just badges, vehicles, medals, CEF etc) when they're off-topic there with something Cdn.

Keep up the good work all. :)
