Question regarding pin fixings on backs of CEF badges

Post by Jonhno on Sat Dec 14, 2013 12:09 pm

I just wondered about the brooch/pin fixing on the back of these CEF badges as I have seen it on both collars, cap badges and now shoulder titles, I was told and have seen them posted as sweetheart badges, which is fine, though I just wondered as now I saw a pair of cef shoulder titles and collars which has this type of fixing to the same bat, so I wondered if which I had before whether some were legitimately converted for service wear rather than just as a sweetheart item? which they also could be?

Hi John, This topic has also been brought up by Lorne in reference to some collars to the 117th. I don't think that the presence of a pin back makes the badge a sweetheart pin. I have many cap badges, collars and titles that have pin backs. The finish on these badges is exactly the same as other badges with lugs. Somewhere, IIRC, there was a discussion about the pin backs not damaging the tunic. This makes sense to me.

I agree with Bill that a pin back doesn't automatically make it a sweet heart pin nor does it automatically make it a officers or NCO badge.

Here's a pic of two known patterns of 117CEF collars with a pair of pin back collars.  Note that they are the same pickled brass type as the second collar with lugs.

thanks guys, had seen a few here and there single ones, but just saw (as mentioned) a pair of shoulders and collars with pin back, which made me wonder,
as it seemed too many have pin backs for them all to have been sweetheart pins, even though I hear there is a certain allure for men in uniform

just regarding finish, what I consider a sweetheart pin would be something enameled (possibly) gilded or with some mother of pearl
