BANNERS OF EMPIRE Empty BANNERS OF EMPIRE

Post by qsamike Sat May 31, 2014 5:44 pm

    Good Afternoon Everyone……

I was lucky enough to obtain at a local Garage Sale the following picture…..  The picture is a print of the original and is in Black and White and then has been coloured in by the original artist in water colours. (This I will have verified)

Titled:  BANNERS OF EMPIRE – Flags of Canadian Regiments placed on General Wolfe’s Tomb, in Westminster Abby while the men are fighting in France.  (All in the handwriting of the Artist.)

    Artist:  HERBERT GUSTAVE SCHMALZ

Size:  Overall 28 Inches by 21 Inches, Viewing 21 ½ Inches by 16 ¼ Inches

Signed:  Signed in Paint in lower Left Hand Crorner  Herbert Schmalz, 1916 – Re-signed in Pencil in lower Right Hand Corner Herbert Schmalz .  Written in the Artists
hand “Dedicated to our Brave Canadian Soldiers.”

    Artists Biography from Wikipedia:

Herbert Gustave Schmalz was born in England as the son of a German father and an. English mother. He received conventional education in painting, first at the South Kensington Art School  and later at the Royal Academy of Arts.  He perfected his studies in Antwerp and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

After his return to London he made a name for himself as a history painter, with a style influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites and orientalism.

After 1895 Schmalz increasingly painted portraits. In 1900 he held a big solo exhibition named "A Dream of Fair Women" in the Fine Art Society in Bond Street.

In 1918, after Germany was defeated in World War 1, he changed his name to John Wilson Carmichael.

Hope you enjoy the painting as it will now become a center point on my wall……

    Mike
