Are you looking for a period photograph? Curious what it is that you are trying to determine. I've seen photos of both the sleeve type carrier and skeleton carrier being used.

I would like to know what kind of carrier was prefered, I saw a lot of skeleton carrier on original pictures.

If it were me, I would prefer the sleeve type carrier but which was more commonly used during the war is unknown to me. The safe answer would be that the soldiers used what was available to them.

Hi Tiflo 62,
I meant to post this photograph a long time ago, but I couldn't remember which book it was in...
It shows a Canadian infantryman at Caen on 25 July 1944 with a mess tin in sleeve carrier on his left hip and the waterbottle in its normal position on his right hip.

I already known the one taken in Caen, but the photo with North Shore is great! Thank you to all people who contribute to the topic.
When I say bottle carrier, I mean the "sleeve" style, have you a closer view of a mess tin in a bottle carrier (as one the picture you posted) ?

Hi Michael. The Van Doos are the Royal 22e Regiment of the First Canadian Infantry Regiment in WW2. Vingt-deux is 22 in French. Mike.

No worries Flo, I was just kidding...
Private D.B.MacDonald, Royal Canadian Regiment (1CID) Campobasso, Italy, 11-14th of October 1943. (It's odd to see the Canadian-style spike bayonet frog, since I thought the Canadians in Italy used mostly British-made webbing...)
