Thoughts on this one? Looks funny to me, bulls eye is not centered. Named tunic, then later in the description named? forget about it.

This one to me falls under Bill A's category of being worth what the parts are worth.

Hi Al, Any chance of a close up of the insignia on the sleeve. The bull's eye patch is an atypical size. It is interesting to note that despite the order to remove imposed formation patches and only wear plain ones, the VIII Recce personnel often ignored the official missives.
The tunic offered in the auction is questionable. In the NW European theatre, CMHQ had ordered all units to wear shoulder titles and plain division patches effective early in 1944. The VIII Recce had to take down the bull's eye patched 2 CID div signs. So, one of two things, either the tunic represents an officer pre early 1944 or it may be put together. The poor placement of the bull's eye patch on the formation patch is odd. The sleeve insignia all seems to be machine sewn in the same manner. Note the tunic is a tailored, being taken in across the back. This is typical of the walking out bd, not the day to day example.
Doesn't pass the smell test for me, and I would want not want this one in my collection.

As you all know, I am pretty much a tunic moron. I have no idea of most of them, outside the Irish Regiment of Canada. Butt this one has only the CANADA patch on the sleeve, should it not also have the VIII CDN RECCE title on it, as shown in the photo supplied by Cameraguy??

I have a period pic of my grandfather badged the same (Canada flash). I will try scanning it tomorrow. Bulls eye patch was issued in I think April and ordered removed in July so very short-lived. Cheers Brian

Thanks Al. It is a larger that usual bull's eye.
Brian, the material from archives suggests the bull's eye patch was worn from circa 1941 through 1944. There was a change in the location of the bull's eye from where it was worn above the formation patch to where it was imposed (sewn on) the patch. At the end of the war many of the personnel put up the bull's eye patch again. It was also worn by the 14 Canadian Hussars in the post war army.

In light of the examples posted here, my example appears to be quite plain; although I did get it for free 28 years ago.

It also came with the original member's Pay Book as well as a photo of him in his uniform on his return to Canada.

Thanks Ed. The shoulder titles are an atypical pattern, quite likely private purchase. Interesting to see the 21st Army Gp patch on the epaulet.

No probs Bill,I do what I can. :) This Veteran(Alex) also had a few items he took from a German who tried to "take him out" in Holland.Fortunately,Alex was a little quicker with his Sten! I can only wish to have this 8th RECCE piece of history as I would know the story behind it.

Looked back over my old e-mails as I had asked Tom Mason about the bullseye patch. He said they were issued shortly after mobilization on April 23rd and ordered removed on July 3rd. I don't know if anyone defied this order. I know they came back into use after the war. Cheers Brian

No date but if what Im told about the patch is right it would have to place it in 1941. Cheers Brian
