Summer Weight Tunic and Cap Empty Summer Weight Tunic and Cap

    Post by jholl72 Wed May 28, 2014 5:48 pm

    Hi guys,
This arrived today. Its a WWI summer weight tunic and cap, the seller says it belonged to an officer in the 73rd Northumberland Regiment. He replaced the cap badge with the one that is on it.
The chin strap buttons look replaced so that leads me to question the originality of the strap. I was under the impression that WWI chin straps were thinner.
I also have been trying to figure out the pattern of tunic that this is. Five button with scalloped top pockets and the lower pockets are the bellows style. Single pointed cuffs and the single pleated seam down the back. It has some features I've seen in Boer war era uniforms and some features from the Pattern 1912 but I've yet to get a definitive answer.
I also have a question about the webbing, I've never seen the Y strap style before. Is this a private purchase style or something completely bogus?

Summer Weight Tunic and Cap Empty Summer Weight Uniform

Post by edstorey Wed May 28, 2014 6:35 pm

A very nice uniform set! The 'webbing' is actually leather. I would be suspect of the leather belt and 'Y' straps as Officer's wore Sam Browne equipment. The Waitbelt appears to be Other Ranks Oliver 1898 Pattern. I doubt the 'Y' Straps are correct as the leather does not appear to be as old as that of the belt and the chromed buckles don't appear to be of the period.

Summer Weight Tunic and Cap Empty Leather Y Straps

It looks like what you have is a set of Yugoslav leather 'Y' Straps that have been attached to the belt. Besides the lack or age and matching wear on the OR's Olive Belt, the chromed fittings as opposed to brass is the give-away.

Thanks Ed! I googled them and it looks like you nailed it. Same style and stitching.
Now to dig out the proper Sam Browne set and get it set up.
