    X-Company OMG

Post by qsamike on Thu Feb 19, 2015 12:56 am

    Good Evening Everyone......

Just watched the first episode of the above named Canadian made TV show......

All I can say is OMG.......

I thought they learnt their lesson after the flop Bomb Girls with the number of uniform and other errors......

A Colonel outside without a hat, walking around with hands in his pockets, not to mention his ribbon bar.......

    Accuracy

I stopped watching these types of Canadian productions as the lack of any accuracy or authenticity is just too much to take. Sad really as with the Bomb Girls the premise was not too bad.

I was the Historical advisor for the fist season of Bomb Girls. I sat in a Production meeting with the dept heads for 2 hours explaining how the rounds were filled ect, I might as well have been talking to trees!!! They did change a few things to get it better, but not most.

As for this new show, I helped run the Camp X Museum in Whitby as well being a member of the Camp X Historical Society for many years. My Name was mentioned to the production company by people in the film industry. Niether I, nor anyone else from the Camp X group were contacted.

Just shows they had already made their minds up as to how it look.
    I didn't even watch it.

    Good Morning Dean.......

Oh I know that the stories are fiction but they could make things a lot better with a tiny bit of accuracy........

To me it gives a bad impression of the job done by the people who actually fought and the younger generation will think that it is more of a game than real life....... I was at a show once and a teenager said to me that he was surprised that a video game gave away prizes in the form of medals......

I am sorry Dean but it is just a pet peeve of mine......

Maybe one good thing may come out from it........ Your museum may get lots more visitors........

    X Company

I enjoyed the show, I am sure the folks on the German uniform forums are picking apart the uniforms as well. But at least some one is making the effort to make these programs, what would you rather watch, Naked and Afraid on the Discovery channel, or the American Heroes Channel where the 'Mericans saved the world?

I really don't get why people bash programs and movies about Canadian history, I have read so many negative comments about Passchendaele, Juno Beach, etc. Yes I know some of the uniforms are incorrect, but really the story is being told. And the younger generation really doesn't care about the proper placement of the collar dogs on a CEF uniform.

As I said, it is important that the story is being told.

    All About the Story

Post by edstorey on Thu Feb 19, 2015 12:41 pm

Uniforms aside, in the case of 'Passchendale', if it is all about the story, then explain to me how a drug addicted Canadian Nursing Sister; who I might add was apparently stealing medication from the military, would end up 'shacking up' with an Other Rank in Canada? As well, please also explain to me how that same Nursing Sister would end up have sex behind the gun lines in France? I can site more glaring errors if you want as the movie was a complete Paul Gross fantasy film with no basis to reality other then the title.

If that motion picture had been released 20 or 30 years ago when there were still some Great War Veterans alive, especially Nursing Sisters, there would have been the same public outcry as when the 'Valour and the Horror' recieved after it was telecast on TV. As it was there were no WWI Veterans alive and the Canadian historical community and politicians fell all over themselves to praise this motion picture simply because it was made in Canada. Funny how events unfold when the tables are turned. 'ARGO' an American production that also altered the historical facts, was openly criticized not only by those Canadians who had participated in the event but by the key Canadian politicians who were part of the decision making process. There was even a documentary made to explain the true story, a luxury not provided for 'Passchendale' which I might add is passed off to Canadian schools as history.

At least with 'Bomb Girls' the premise was an interesting one that could have been a vehicle to some history inspired episodes, as it was the producers quickly went off in their own direction.

With any historic piece it is all about the backstory and understanding the era, the movie 'Passchendale' and to some entent the 'Bomb Girls' TV show had none of those elements.

Unfortunatly the Camp X Museum closed a few years ago, all the "Spy" is on long term loan to CSIS in Ottawa, and the Radio equipment is being stored at the Comms Museum.
I live in Ajax, the town that grew up around DIL, on of the largest shell filling plants in the world during WW2, so I based all of my research on that plant.
I had nothing to do with the scripts on Bomb Girls.

If you want to see something funny, find a copy of the first season of bomb girls on DVD, go to the extras, then go to Research, I am on there for about 7 mins explaining the plant at DIL, you can sure tell that I am not fond with being in front of the Camera, I prefer to work behind it, and have been working in the Film industry here in Toronto for 20 years now, so I understand why things are done the way they are, it's all about making the film or series profitable.

    Just my Thoughts
