I have heard these were worn by gunners in the artillery. This is just hearsay though .... I have no reference to support this.

Funny you should come up with that response Ypres, my first thought was some kind of flash guard, maybe for Navy gunners. Artillery is a good chance but like you said - no reference - just a guess.
Hopefully Ed will pipe up soon, he probably has two of these as well.

Artillery is what I had heard it was for as well, but I have never seen any evidence in photos or otherwise.

I do have at least one, but I have no firm lead as to what it was made for. Perhaps Garrison Artillery, but that is just a guess.
