Hello Jack! Thanks for joining us!

I don't know much about Steele's scouts, but I'm sure someone will come up with some good information for you. We are steadily getting more info on the forum daily so something should turn up soon.

    Thanks!
    Dale

    Hello Jack:

Have you contacted the University of Alberta Libraries about the Sir Samuel Steele Collection? I don't know if it's accessible by the public, but I now it contains Steele's private correspondence, manuscipt memoirs, diaries and many other interesting items.

    Steele's Scouts Empty Steele's Memoirs

Post by RNR Thu Dec 03, 2009 6:56 am

    Jack,

You are probably aware of this but Steele published a memoir in 1915 of his time in the NWMP and the Boer War. It was entitled "Forty Years in Canada: Reminiscences of the Great North-West with Some Account of His Service in South Africa." Origionally published by Dodd, Mead & Co. it was republished in 2000 by Prospero Books. While this book has been sitting on my shelf for years I have not given it a thourough read yet but he spends some time talking about the rebellion, not sure how detailed it is though or if it it will suit your needs.

    Hello All....

The Steele collection was purchased by the Government of Alberta..... The papers etc. were sent to the Alberta Archives and are being digitally photographed and will be on line according to my contacts sometime in the spring or summer of 2010..... The Medals, Uniforms, Swords, Weapons and Equipment (for the Boer War and up to WW1 period) are in the Glenbow Museum here in Calgary..... I had the honour along with a couple of other members of the CMHS of sorting through the items and cataloging them for the Glendow, I looked after the medals and badges in the collection..... When the new 4th floor opens at the Glendow in February there will be a special room / display set aside strictly for Steele.... They did have the medals on display for a few months in the Maverick's of Alberta before it was closed for renovations.....

There is a book available covering the period after his command of the Strathcona's and the work he did with Baden-Powell trying to form in South Africa a police unit based on the NWMP..... It is called No Colours, No Drums, the Canadians in the South African Constabulary..... (I have a couple of copies).....
