Historic mace stolen from Vancouver regiment‏

A 100-year-old ceremonial mace belonging to Vancouver's Seaforth Highlanders has been stolen, and the regiment's soldiers are hoping the thieves will return it by Remembrance Day on Thursday.

The mace was reportedly inside a car belonging to the regiment's drum sergeant when the vehicle was stolen from a parking lot at Queens Park Arena in New Westminster on Oct. 29.

Lt.-Col. Paul Ursich, the regiment's commanding officer, plans to make a public appeal for the return of the mace on Tuesday afternoon.

Capt. Chris Poulton said the mace was given to the infantry reserve unit when it was formed in 1910. The volunteer regiment, whose members have served in every major deployment of Canadian soldiers since the First World War, is preparing to celebrate its centennial later this month.

I highly doubt that the vehicle thief had a clue what that thing was in the backseat, or trunk. Until this story broke, and even now, I doubt they know about the item as they likely don't read the news at all. It's a very unfortunate incident for sure. I do hope it is returned at some point soon.

Just an FYI, my wife was talking to one of her friends in Vancouver today, who is involved with the Seaforth band, and they did get the mace back.
