For tonites auction I'm offering a collection of medals and collectable coins from a local estate. No returns, please look at the pictures well and decide condition for yourself. Up for auction is a Boer War Medal with 3 clasps. The claps are: 1) SOUTH AFRICA 1901, 2) ORANGE FREE STATE, and 3) NATAL. Printed around the edge of the medal is: VET-LT : C.T. STEVESON, LD. STRATHCONA'S H:.

I would love to bid on that one for sure. Unfortunatly I am traveling as of Monday, no idea what costs I may inccur.

Will certainly be watching this one. I really wish the seller would have posted photos of the naming. As I won't be bidding, no sence in waisting the mans time.

I hear you; Cav is Cav, but in this case, the difference is a couple of Victoria Crosses. :lol:

Doesn't matter anyway as the LdSH had their post-Boer war beginnings from the RCD. :idea:

Does the final price relate to the real value of the medal? I don't know much about Boer War items so I'm a bit curious. Does the VET-LT stand for Veterinary-Lieutenant?

Yes, the value can be related to many things, when looking a the Queen South Africa Medal, I look at them in this order, other collectors may do it differently......

1. Regiment or Unit - Some units are collected because of national connection Canadian, Australian etc., some because of the relative rarity of the unit, they may have had only a few men there, and of course there are some who collect to their own unit or a specific unit only and will therefor pay a premium for a specific medal.....

2. Bars - There are many combinations for this as there are many combinations of bars, but of course there are the favorites, Mafeking, Wepener etc..... Possible unique bars to unit.....

3. Rank - As a rue of thumb, all things being equal, let us say it is $1.00 for a private or junior nco, it would be $1.75 for a senior nco, $2.50 junior officer, $4.50 for a field officer and $8.00+ for a senior or general officer......

4. Name - In this case look to see casualty state, POW, KIA, DOW, DOD but I will say that normally I will not pay a premium for a casualty....

The one thing that gets me a little perturbed is you often see in sales catalogues "Ghost or Shadow Dates"..... To the QSA collector as far as I have observed and also believe there is NO difference in price for a medal with or without a shadow date...... Some people think that the having the shadow date makes the medal rare, well thousands of the medals have a shadow date...... The really rare one is the medal with dates..... There are 55 known dated medals..... I did a survey of my own collection many years ago and found that 52% of the medals in my collection had the shadow dates...... Would love to have a premium price on them....
