Hard to tell from the picture but I have a pair of artillery mans mitts for handling hot shell casings that look similar in shape and color to the item in the picture you posted.

    Sorry Mike,
Thanks for starting the post, was funny I should have sent you a private message with the answer so more people could have a guess. I know better for next time.
I thought they were fairly common, I see them at shows from time to time, always in mint condition. Strange, come to think of it I have yet to see a used pair.

I am ready for the next round if any one has any thing.

Princess Auto Supply had these in their surplus section recently. Very rare to find anything really old there anymore, they must have come across a stash of them somewhere. I'll have to check and see if they still have any more next time I go in.

Now for Something Different - What is it?????? Empty Artillery Mitts

Does anyone have any documentation that can confirm that these are indeed 'artillery mitts'?

    Hi Ed,

No I do not have any documentation that the mitts were used for artillery. Might be what Bill A. Refers to as collector's conventional wisdom and I might be guilty of it.
I took a look at David Gordon's uniforms book in his series and although he does not mention them specificly but does refer to leather mitts used to cover wool gloves for furthur warmth and to protect the wool gloves.

I always thought they were cold weather mitts, similar in form and function to the current issue arctic mitts. Never heard the artillery theory before.

I thought the same thing Steve. But then if I remember correctly, were the Arctic mits not seal skin?

Cliff, I don't know what 1940's vintage arctic mitts were made of. To be clear, I'm not saying that these brown leather mitts are "arctic mitts", but rather relating them to a similar item in modern terms to explain how they might be used. I haven't seen much reference for SWW vintage cold weather gear so my knowledge is lacking in this area. It's my understanding that cold weather gear was held by the Regimental Quartermaster (or equivalent)  and it was only issued when required, such as for a winter exercise and then returned at the end of the training.
