WWII Canadian Service Numbers

Greetings All,


Is there any way to research a WWII Canadian soldier based on only having his service number? I found the online database for war time lost soldiers. Thankfully my guy's number doesn't show up there.


Any help is appreciated.

For WWII Service Publications has a book Regimental Numbers of the Canadian Army, it can tell you who the block of service numbers your guys was assigned to. Its a starting point.
I don't think you can get any information from Library and Archives Canada with only a service number, but there are others with more specific knowledge on that than me.
Without proof of death, which you obviously don't have, you would only get a redacted file. The only WWII files I've requested I had more than just a service number to work with.

I've got a MkII lid with two services numbers on it. One crossed out so a later reissue helmet. I'll see if I can find that book.

B29458 to B29999 No 2 Dist. Depot RCE

D635000 to D699999 No 4 Dist. Depot, the numbers before this are for Basic Training Depot.

if you ask the staff at the Library and Archives Canada nicely, they may well tell you the name of the soldier who had that Service Number. They will not tell you any further info, but at least with a name you can some searching and maybe find an obit with which you can use to get his service records if more than 20 years have elapsed since his death.

I have done this twice in the past with good results.

Hi, I am from the UK, my granddad was in the Canadian army, I have his marriage certificate from Thirtieth April 945 and it states his Private number as E/37001 (Harold Annett(e)). My nanna and granddad divorced as Harold wanted to return to Canada but my nanna wanted to remain in England. I have been tracing our family tree and am hoping that any military records may help me a little bit, I hit a stumbling block because I have records of Harold born in 1920 in Gaspe, Quebec but my search ends there although I have another person named Earle who was born at the same time in the same place, so wondered if maybe he used Harold on his marriage certificate because he as maybe using that name as Earle wasn't a known name in the UK.

Also on the marriage certificate Harold's father is named as George and Georg was also Earle's father....can anybody point me in the direction of where I may find anymore information or if Earle is a French Canadian form of the name Harold.

Can anyone tell me about the No 2 Dist. Depot RCE? Specifically, did this organization have MPs directly assigned to them?

Jim and Nicki I suggest too, that you both write to Library and Archives Canada with your current information.  If the person has not been deceased for more that 20 years information will be limited, this might be an issue for you Jim as Nicki being a family member, I believe you will have more information available.  Also Nicki on these records it would have address's for next of kin, so that might be a help
