WW2 Battledress unmarked? purpose?

Hi everyone,

i keep coming across battle dresses with no rank, or patches of any kind. If they are plain (no badges or ranks), have they been used in the war? Weren't all soldiers given patches to represent their units?

They have either had the insignia removed if they are in used condition, or if in new condition they likely were never issued. There would be insignia applied to all uniforms used by a soldier, even if minimal.
