Oh I Wish......

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen.....

Was in a second hand store yesterday afternoon and saw a set of ribbons in a display case.....

1939-45 Star / Italy Star / France and Germany Star / Defence Medal / Canadian Volunteer Service Medal / 1939-45 War Medal / United States Bronze Star

In hope that the medals were there I asked the lady behind the counter....

She stated that the silver medals were sold to a person who that buys all her old silver to melt it down as scrap.....

Of the three stars there was one left, the Italy Star, which I picked up for less than $10.....

The Bronze Star had been sold the day before and I asked if it had a name on it and she said she thought so....

If I could have gotten the Bronze Star I could have rebuilt the group and found out to what Gallant Canadian it had been awarded.....

Nothing I can do now and another great set of medals broken up.....

Not just broken up.... destroyed. It's all about money for some people. Sad.

Even one is too many and there is no doubt in my mind that it happens routinely across the country.

As our World War Two medals are not named. I assume it must happen all the time. Even a common grouping to the 1st div or 5th div, ie: 39-45 Star, Italy Star, F&G Star, CVSM, WM and DM can only be taken at its face value. A real shame honestly.

My family groupings all fall into this category, including my uncle Clifford's group which includes the Memorial cross. The memorial cross is of course attributable, however, the 2 stars, CVSM, WM and DM cannot be attributed to him. (really sucks in my opinion)
