picked up this helmet recently, a re-issue US WW1 shell with the transitional leather liner and web chinstrap, what I found interesting was the canadian service no. on the inside, am I right in thinking a canadian no.?

I think that is a US number...Initial of last name and last four numbers of the social security number. I know it is something like that. A lot of US items are marked as such.
Nice helmet too...I like the old M-1917A1 lids.

Dale, thanks for the info on that, I am out of my comfort zone with US no's of course just learning the Canadian system too, hence my assumption, had not seen this type of helmet in hand before, but all looked good and untouched from what I have seen in books, I might be able to find some history on the owner

It will be pretty tough without a full name and/or service number. The NARA ADD website that lists WWII service records needs either one, or both, to do a search.

I posted on another forum and someone pointed me to another forum where a guy has designed a search engine for US no's
http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/foru...now-available/
but it looks like I will have 40 or so hits from this initial, might give it a go, appreciate your help though Dale

No problem.
Could you repost that link...it seems to be dead. I would like to check out that search site too. I still have many US items in the collection.

I own a couple of strange M1917A1 related items.
Here is an image of an M1917A1 which I own and in this case the helmet shell is a Canadian manufactured Mk II.
As well I have a Canadian manufactured Anti-Gas Helmet Curtain No. 2 which is US Chemical Corps marked.

M1917A1
The shell is CL/C and the liner is your standard leather M1917A1 variety.
