RCA Ebay tunic Empty RCA Ebay tunic

Post by Jonhno Fri Oct 10, 2014 5:39 am

In case anyone here is bidding on this tunic it has been altered since I sold it, I did try to contact the seller and ask him to make the changes or remove the sale, but I was told to stop bothering him !, regardless if it meets the reserve, this is what spoils the hobby

There seems to be more and more of this sort of thing going on lately. It is a real shame. Out of curiosity, what are the modifications you noted?

Postwar sergeant's stripes and a post-1958 officer's cap with a sergeant's battledress. This would never have sold for the reserve except to an unsuspecting novice. It is regrettable that anyone would try to sell this as 'original'.

Not speaking french all that well, I get the impression that thegate is the ebay seller? And he did alter the uniform but only after figuring that it was already rebadged? Am I wrong in that translation?

I would also like a translation/summary of that post. Looks like "thegate" also sold the helmet in shown in his avitar.

Yes. Look at the address on the label. Scully was on University Ave., from 1908 to 1958, when the property was expropriated to build Place Ville Marie. in 1958 they moved to Craig St., and then in 1966 to Moreau St., where they remain today.
Also, the colour and width of the leather chin strap is very distinctive to the 1960s.

WOW, my eyesight sucks. I cannot read the address on that label. I also cannot see the Sgt stripes clearly enough to see they are one piece?

A shame this has happened. I have learned something again in this topic.

I noticed you had a comment on the helmet that was sold. I looked at the photos in the link .... it was marked GSW AP .... I thought these AP types were home defence helmets (ARP, Fire Wardens etc.). I thought the 77th was a unit that would not have been issued this type of helmet? .... I never think in absolutes and am not a WWII Helmet expert, so am open to some learning here. I learned this early during collecting ... in the early 1980's, a WWI Brodie helmet without a rubber doughnut was wrongly considered American? At that time, all kinds of serious collectors were leaving unit marked helmets on tables for $30 or $40. Its amazing how these "Rules" start! Even after 40 years of collecting, I am still a student ......

A thought on the BD and hat. I agree with one of Bill's earlier posts. He stated that a WWII uniform should only be worth what the component parts are worth. Unless a uniform comes with all types of documentation identifying it to an individual, I personally will only pay what the components are worth. I'm surprised this tunic and hat made it to the price it did before the auction ended !

Hello ypres, you have to confuse making him GSW and G.S.W. DP&H
    GSW is a fight helmet

    G.S.W. DP&H is a civil helmet

I found this post about the GSW AP Helmets

    Ypres

mk1rceme wrote:Recent ebay purchase that came in today. It is a GSW AP marked mkII shell. According to Tin Lids, the AP stamped shells were rejected for combat use and diverted to civil defense. Still working on what the acronym Q.C.E.A. would stand for? Only thing I can think of is Quebec City...something...something. Helmet came out of Nova Scotia though.

It is in superb condition and does not show any abuse at all...some minor scrapes but mostly just really dusty. Liner has dried out a bit, but that is all too common. Lots of spider webs around the liner which is good to see.

Yes, I was also confused by the G.S.W. stamp, it was always my understanding from what i read that they were for home service but the addition of the DP&H stamp makes sense.

I would have listened if there were any issues with this tunic, that is my point, I am not someone who makes confrontation and posting this thread is not something I would see myself doing, I don't want to see anyone get ripped off, that is plain and simple,
I don't understand why when I pointed out some things like the moved badge or the added medal ribbon or the spilled paint inside you didn't agree with me? this was the only way I knew to try and put the brakes on, sorry it upset you, I would have gladly given you back the 125 if you told me all this before
