Mystery Cap Badge Empty Mystery Cap Badge

Post by ypres Tue Feb 06, 2018 6:34 pm

I picked up this Field Service Cap recently. Obvious 65 Carbiniers Mont Royal. The mystery to me is the cloth badge to the left of the cap. The badge is embroidered on Rifle Green and is identical in colour to the cap. I would assume the 65 is a reference to the militia unit. I'm not sure what the AAS may stand for ? I have seen an Aussie badge that identified AAS as Army Apprentice School. This doesn't make sense in a Canadian context? Any info welcomed.

    Thanks,

    Ypres

I believe it stands for Anti Aircraft Searchlight.
I found something saying that the 65th battalion Carabiniers Mont Royal served as a searchlight unit and as a light anti-aircraft regiment during World War II?

Not sure where that information came from. The 65th Carabiniers Mont Royal were re-designated Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal in 1920. As such they served as an infantry battalion in 2 Canadian Division during the Second World War. Anti-aircraft Searchlight Batteries were short lived, from the start of the war until about the middle of 1942. They were Royal Canadian Artillery units.
    Perhaps Association Ancien Soldats ?

It wasn't a very reliable source I have to admit. It was something I found on the web a while ago that seems to have disappeared.
Perhaps this might help, though granted, the source is equally dodgy :

    Regimental associations
Former members may join the active associations from the Officers Mess and the Sergents Mess. L'Association les Anciens Sergents Les Fusiliers Mont-Royal accepts retired members of the Junior Ranks Mess as associate members.

That regimental association seems to fit the bill. Good work.
