Nice well worn cap badge, it sure looks to have been polished often judging by the wear.
Also looks like it still retains the plastic backing to stiffen up the fabric behind the cap badge.

As many of you know the wartime berets do not have any stiffening behind the cap badge, without any type of stiffing the cap badge just flops around and does not look very professional. It was left up to the soldier to come up with a backing behind the cap badge.
I have found many interesting types of backing over the years, from plastic like this to brass plates to what looks like tin from a ration can. I have also seen very nicely made brass backing plates, I wonder if these were manufactured for this purpose or someone in REME made them up for trade for a pint at the JR mess.

Very good question. I have also seen very "creative" cap badge backing. One of my favorites cigarette packaging.
